A FEW TIPS & TRICKS FOR USING
YOUR PALM WITH AOL

WEB BROWSING WITH AVANT GO

First, if you haven't already, go to AVANTGO and download the software. You will be guided through the installation process. During the download and the set up, stay online with AOL. When AvantGo instructs you to HotSync, put your Palm in its HotSync cradle and perform the HotSync while you are online.

AvantGo will install a program on your computer that allows you to connect to the AvantGo server via your HotSync cradle while you are connected to AOL. All the necessary settings and configuration will be performed in the background by AvantGo as long as you remain connected to AvantGo during the set up process.

Several files will be installed on your Palm when you perform the on-line HotSync, including AvantGo's Mobile Link library. Again, all this will be set up correctly for you as long as you remain on line and connected to AvantGo.

Once Avant Go is downloaded and installed, select your channels and perform another online HotSync. The channels will be downloaded to your Palm.

That's it.

Now whenever you want to update your AvantGo content, sign on to AOL, put your Palm in its HotSync cradle, and push the HotSync button.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Can I sign on to Avant Go using my Palm modem?

Yes, as long as you are using AOL Mail for the Palm v 3.0

Whenever I HotSync now, if I'm not online I get "Error 5453 : Could Not Resolve The MAL Server Name."

This is just AvantGo trying to update its content. Ignore it. In a few seconds, AvantGo will decide you are not online and your HotSync will proceed normally.

When I try to perform a HotSync to download Avant Go channels, I get an error message saying Com "X" is already in use.

If you have more than two devices hooked up to your serial ports, you probably won't be able to perform a HotSync while on line. Check out the excellent article on HotSync problems, including  IRQ Conflicts, in the AOL PDA Tips and FAQs library. Go to keyword PDA, then click on "Quick Tips and FAQs." Click on "General PDA FAQs & Tips," then scroll down to Tip #031 "Solving PDA to Desktop Sync Problems."

If you can't change your hardware set up, consider using iSiloX instead of AvantGo. It allows you to perform the HotSync while you are offline.
