A FEW TIPS & TRICKS FOR USING
YOUR PALM WITH AOL

AOL MAIL ~ E MAIL ~ AND YOUR PALM

Can I use the built in Mail Application to download my AOL email to my Palm during A HotSync ?

Unfortunately, no. The Palm Mail Application is designed to synchronize with a POP3 mail client like Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. AOL doesn't use the POP3 internet email standard.

Is there any other way to get my AOL email on my Palm Pilot?

Yes! There are two applications that will do this.

  • AOL Mail For the Palm, available from AOL at Keyword: Anywhere costs $20.00. It works with any PalmOS PDA (Palm, Handspring, Sony, Handera) that uses Palm OS 3.0 or higher. It supports email, Instant Messaging, web browsing, web clipping, POP mail clients, and any other Palm application that uses a TCP/IP connection.  AOL Mail for the Palm is designed to work with a Palm modem. It does not hotsync your mail from the desktop to your PDA. There is no try before you buy shareware version.
  • eNetBot available from eNetBot will redirect your desktop AOL email to a POP mail server. You can then download it to Outlook Express and HotSync it using your Palm's built in Mail application. This might be the only way for PDA owners without a PDA modem to get their email. It also costs $20.00. A free trial version is available at the eNetBot website: http://www.enetbot.com

What happened to the free version of AOL Mail?

AOL withdrew it when they released AOL Mail v 3.0  The free version only allowed you to download email and send instant messages. It did not support TCP/IP connections, so web browsing etc was not possible. It had not been updated for almost 2 years.

How do I make AOL Mail work with my Palm Pilot?

I have a web based email account. Can I download mail from it to my Palm while I'm logged on to AOL?

That depends on which web-based email service you use. The web email server has to support the POP3 mail standard. If you can read your web mail in Outlook Express, you may be able to download it to the built-in Palm Mail application during a HotSyncHowever, very few free, web based email services offer POP3 mail.

If you do have a POP3 email service,  Click here for Step By Step Instructions for setting up Outlook Express, AOL, and the Palm's Mail applet.

I've had very limited success with Hotmail even though it can sometimes be downloaded to Outlook Express. Click here for more information on Hotmail.

Can I use AOL Mail with the Handspring Visor? Sony Clie?

Yes. All PALM OS PDAs are fully supported by AOL Mail. You must have a modem for your Visor or Clie, however, as the serial port work-arounds probably will not work with the USB cradle.

Can I use a cellular phone/modem with AOL Mail?

Maybe. That really depends on your cellular provider, what type of cell phone you have, and which Palm OS you are running. Click here for a fuller discussion and some suggestions.

Can I use AOLMail with my Palm VII or my i705?

Yes. For the Palm VII, you will probably have to buy AOL Mail v3. The i705 comes with a built in mail client for AOL. Go to palm's web site for a full tutorial on configuring your i705 to work with AOL

Does any of this work with a Mac?

I'm sorry -- I don't know anything about Macs. PilotNet, the application needed for the PC Modem work-around, is a Windows application. There may be a similar program for the Mac, but I've never heard of it. As for the rest of it -- I just don't know.

The PDA Forum on AOL has many knowledgeable and helpful Mac users. Go to Keyword : PDA. Then click Message Boards. Then choose Browse The Message Boards. Scroll down to Palm OS PDAs. Click on it and look through the folders.
