A FEW TIPS & TRICKS FOR USING
YOUR PALM WITH AOL

TROUBLESHOOTING &
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

AOL MAIL

Where's the Address Book in AOL Mail

AOL Mail uses the Palm's address book. When you tap on the "To" field in a new email, a list of all the Address Book entries with email addresses will automatically pop up.

Can I synchronize my AOL address book and my Palm address book?

At this time, no. However, I've worked out a method to transfer your AOL Address Book to your Palm. Click here for step by step instructions.

AOL Mail starts OK, but it hangs after connecting. I get a message saying something like "Starting Services" and then nothing.

This is an old problem on the AOL servers, not with your Palm or Visor. Some BuddyLists on the AOL server were corrupted when AOL upgraded to AOL 6.0. The problem was supposed to have been fixed, but it still crops up occaisionally. It can affect AOL Mail users, whether they are using AOL 6.0 or not, whether they use BuddyLists or not, whether they have Palms or Visors. I believe it even affects both Mac and Windows users.

Luckily there is a simple fix. Sign on to your desktop version of AOL under your Master Screen Name. Make a change to your BuddyList. It doesn't matter if you add or delete a name - just change something. This forces the server to flush the corrupted BuddyList from its cache. Sign off AOL.  Now sign on to AOL Mail for the Palm using your Palm or Visor. It should work. (Some users have reported that they also needed to do a soft reset on the Palm before the problem disappeared.)

Does AOL Mail work with the Palm VII? The Palm i705?

Yes. For the Palm VII, you will probably have to buy AOL Mail v3. The i705 comes with a built in mail client for AOL. Go to palm's web site for a full tutorial on configuring your i705 to work with AOL

When I start AOL Mail for the Palm, it gives an error message saying something about "Web Clipping."

AOL Mail v 3.0 supports the web clipping apps that are used on Palm.net. You can use these handy applications over a TCP/IP connection, assuming you have the correct hardware. The web clipping libraries are built in to Palm OS 4. The applications are usually free. You can download them from http://www.palm.net  "My AOL" is one small part of AOL Mail v 3.0. It requires web clipping, but the rest of AOL Mail doesn't. So you can just ignore the message, and continue using the email and web browsing and instant messaging parts of the program.

Does AOL Mail v 3.0 support attachments?

No.

Can I download messages from AOL Forums and Usenet newsgroups with AOL Mail's Auto AOL?

No.

Can I use Instant Messages with AOL Mail.

Yes, AOL Mail incorporates BuddyLists and IMs.

I want to use web clipping applications (PQAs). Does the Palm Mobile Internet Kit work with AOL?

Yes. AOL Mail v. 3.0 now supports TCP/IP connections for the Palm.

WEB BROWSING

I have a mouse attached to Com 1 and my HotSync cradle attached to Com 2. Why can't I download Avant Go content or use PilotNet?

This is a Windows limitation. Although your computer has 4 Com ports (and maybe even a virtual Com 5 for Infrared), you can only use 2 of them at once. There is an excellent article on HotSync problems, including  IRQ Conflicts, in the PDA Tips and FAQs library. Go to keyword PDA, then click on "Quick Tips and FAQs." Click on "General PDA FAQs & Tips," then scroll down to Tip #031 "Solving PDA to Desktop Sync Problems."

Is there any easy way to solve IRQ conflicts?

If your PC has a PS2 mouse port (a round plug, similar to the plug for your keyboard), buy a PS2 mouse to replace your serial mouse. Most newer computers also have USB ports. You can try using a USB mouse. Make sure your HotSync cradle and modem don't have conflicting IRQs. (Com 1 and Com 3 share an Interrupt. Com 2 and Com 4 share an Interrupt.)

I can't use a PS2 mouse or a USB mouse. Is there any way to get web content on my Palm using AOL as my ISP?

Yes. Use iSiloX instead of Avant Go. Click here for a description of iSilox.

Do I need a modem to use Avant Go with AOL?

No. Once you set up Avant Go, sign on to AOL, put your Palm in its HotSync cradle and push the HotSync button. Your Palm will automatically connect to the Avant Go server and download your channels.

Can I use Blazer, PalmScape, Yanoff or other browsers and newsreaders with AOL?

Yes. You'll need AOL Mail for the Palm v 3.0 if you want to use a Palm web browser or Palm web clipping (PQA) applications. It is available at Keyword: Anywhere or from Handango. It costs $20.00

OUTLOOK EXPRESS

I can't get Outlook Express to HotSync with my Palm Pilot's Mail application.

The first version of Outlook Express 5 wouldn't HotSync. This was soon corrected by Microsoft. If you are having trouble, check your version number.  If you are using Internet Explorer 5, you must have Internet Explorer and Outlook Express version 5.00.2314.1300, or later. To check the version, go to "Help" in the Menu bar of Internet Explorer. Click on "About Internet Explorer."

I set up Outlook Express 5, but when I try to HotSync I get an error message saying I have to make Outlook Express my default MAPI client. I can't find any MAPI settings.

Chances are you are using Outlook Express 5 with Palm Desktop 3.0. There are no MAPI settings for Outlook Express 5. Make sure Outlook Express 5 is set as your default mail reader, then ignore the error message -- you will be able to HotSync. After the first HotSync, the error message disappears. The latest Palm Desktop, v 4.1, also corrects this error. You can download it from Palm.
