A FEW TIPS & TRICKS FOR USING
YOUR PALM WITH AOL

WEB BROWSING WITH iSiloWeb

iSilo has released a new version of iSiloWeb called iSiloX. It is slightly different than iSiloWeb - but I haven't had a chance to do screen captures of the new version. There is an excellent FAQ available at http://www.isilox.com

First, if you haven't already go to iSilo and download a copy of the iSilo Reader and a copy of iSiloWeb. These are two separate applications and you will need a copy of both. The iSilo Reader, which you will use to view web pages, is a Palm application. iSiloWeb, which will grab and convert web pages, is a desktop application.

  1. Install iSilo Reader on your Palm.

  2. Unzip iSiloWeb to a new directory and run the set up program.

That's it. You're ready to set your preferences, pick your channels, and sync it all with your Palm Pilot.

CONFIGURING iSiloWeb

Here are a few tips on setting up iSilo Web:

The first time you start iSiloWeb, you'll be greeted by a Menu Bar and a Blank screen.

  • You can add channels manually, by clicking on "Channels," choosing "Add Web..." and then typing in the URL.

  • Or  you can do it the easy way by dropping the "e" displayed in Internet Explorer's Address Bar onto the iSiloWeb window.

    1. Open iSiloWeb

    2. Sign on to AOL

    3. Open Internet Explorer (Note : AOL's web browser doesn't have an Address Bar. You have to use Internet Explorer.)

    4. Connect to the web page you want to add to your iSiloWeb Channel selection

    5. Drag the "e"  symbol in Internet Explorer's Address Bar onto the iSiloWeb window and drop it.

You need to tell iSiloWeb how to displays your channels.

  • Click on a channel. From the Menu Bar, click on "Channels," then choose "Properties."

    1. On the "Channel" tab, make sure the "Retrieve title automatically during synchronization" box is checked. This tells iSilo to grab the web pages you've selected for download.

    2. The "Destination" tab should list the User Name of the Palm Pilot.

    3. The "HTML" tab lets you set the link depth.

    4. The "Images" tab lets you decide whether or not to show images.

    5. The "Doc/Text" tab allows you to control how words are wrapped on your Palm's screen.

  • Properties can be set by default or for individual web pages.

    • For instance, if you normally want a link depth of only "1," you'd set that in your "Default Properties" tab.

    • But you read a magazine whose index page leads only to titles. You have to click on the titles to read the articles. So far this Channel, you'd need a Link Depth of "2."

      1. Click on the Channel Title

      2. Click on Channels in the Menu Bar

      3. Click on "Properties" -- not Default Properties -- and set your link depth.

Once you've chosen your Channels and configured iSiloWeb, you can download the pages to your PC.

  • If you are not already online, sign on to AOL

  • Open iSiloWeb

  • You can convert individual channels or all channels

  • Click on the "Convert" or "Convert All" Tool Bar buttons.

  • Progress bars will appear showing you which pages are being converted from HTML to iSilo documents

  • When you're done, you'll see a little box saying the conversion was successful.

If you want to add some pre-formatted, AvantGo style channels to iSiloWeb, try the links provided by PlinkIt!
