A FEW TIPS & TRICKS FOR USING
YOUR PALM WITH AOL

AOL ~ OUTLOOK EXPRESS ~ AND YOUR PALM

How do I configure Outlook Express to work with AOL and my Palm?

Please note : This process will enable you to download  POP3 mail to your Palm while you are connected to the internet via AOL. It will not download AOL email. For that, you need the AOL Mail client for the Palm, available at Keyword : Anywhere.

AOL does not support POP3 Mail. POP Mail is an internet standard used by many other dial up ISPs. You may also have a POP mail account at school or at work. You can use Outlook Express - or any other POP mail client - to retrieve and read that mail while you are connected to AOL using your PC. Then you can HotSync the mail to your Palm's built-in Mail application.

You can also use a POP mail app on your Palm while you are connected to the internet via AOL Mail for the Palm v 3.0. In that case, you will need to download and install a POP mail reader to your Palm. There are many available at PalmGear

These directions will help you set up Outlook Express, since it is free and installed by Microsoft on every Windows PC. The process is similar in other email readers, despite some variations.

First, set Outlook Express as your default mail reader.

  • If you are using Internet Explorer 5, make sure you have the latest version of Outlook Express.

  • If you run into HotSync errors, go to Microsoft and get the latest version of Internet Explorer (Outlook Express is a bundled component of Internet Explorer - it is also available as a separate download).

Outlook Express (or any other POP mail reader, like Eudora or Pegasus) will also work with a program called eNetBot. This may be useful for AOL subscribers who do not want to invest in a Palm modem. Enetbot is a third party service, not supported by AOL. It redirects your AOL Email through eNetBot's own POP and SMTP mail servers. You then download your AOL email to Outlook Express, rather than to the AOL Filing Cabinet. At that point, your AOL email may be sent to your Palm during a HotSync. To find out more about eNetBot, visit their web site: http://www.enetbot.com  (Outlook Express allows you to add a new email account to your existing profile, so you do not have to replace any of your current settings in order to send and receive AOL Mail messages, if you choose to use eNetBot.)

The following settings are for eNetBot. Other mail accounts will have different server addresses and account names. You need to get the POP and SMTP server addresses from your email service provider.

  • In Outlook Express 5, from the Tools menu, choose Account

  • Select the Mail tab.

  • Click the Add button.

  • From the Add menu, click Mail

  • In the text box labeled Display Name, type a name for the account (for instance "your screen name @aol"), and then click Next

  • In the Email address box, type your email address

  • Select POP3 to answer the question My incoming mail server is a POP3 server.

  • In the Incoming (POP3 or IMAP) box, type your POP server address. For eNetBot, this is aol.enetbot.com

  • In the Outgoing (SMTP) box type your SMTP server address. For eNetBot, this is still aol.enetbot.com

  • Click Next.

  • In the Account name box, type your AOL screen name, without the @aol.com.

  • In the Password box, type your password.

  • Do not check the Log on using secure password box.

  • Click Next

  • Click Finish.

Repeat these steps to add additional screen names.

To control deletion of messages from the AOL Mail Server :

  • From the Tools menu, choose Account

  • Select the Mail tab.

  • Double-click the account labeled aol.enetbot.com

  • Select the Advanced tab.

  • In the Delivery section at the bottom of the window:

    • Check Leave a copy of messages on server if you want to save your AOL Mail messages on the AOL server as well as in Outlook Express. Be careful with this setting - you may download the same messages over and over again.

    • If you want your messages to be deleted from AOL once you have received them in Outlook Express, do not check this box

Once again, these are the Server settings for eNetBot :

  • Incoming Mail (POP3) Server: aol.enetbot.com

  • Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server: aol.enetbot.com

  • Account Name/Login Name: your AOL screen name

  • E-mail address: your AOL email address with the @aol.com

  • Password: your AOL password

If you are using another POP Mail account, the server addresses and user names will be different. If you are not using eNetBot, you CANNOT download AOL email to Outlook Express.

Finally, you need to add this information to eNetBot. They have step by step instructions to guide you through this process. Check their online manual at http://www.enetbot.com/support/manual/man_3_3_2.asp

Now all you have to do is set up the Email client on your Palm and sign on to AOL while eNetBot is active.

  • Once you've logged on to AOL, put your Palm in its HotSync cradle.

  • Press the Hot Sync button.

Outlook Express will log on to eNetBot, upload any new messages you've written, download any mail you've received, and sync it all with your Palm (assuming, of course, that these are the settings you've chosen).
