A FEW TIPS & TRICKS FOR USING
YOUR PALM WITH AOL

MUST HAVE SOFTWARE

All Palm web pages have a list of links to Must Have Software. These are the applications I wouldn't want to do without.

FREEWARE :

  • Avant Go (Web browser and clipping service)
  • CSpotRun (a terrific doc reader)
  • DiddleBug (A combination of yellow sticky notes, a scratch pad, a drawing app, and alarms.)
  • HackDelete Hack (Won't let you delete an active hack -- saving you from inadvertent crashes.)
  • iSiloX (used in conjunction with iSilo reader for offline web browsing)
  • MakeDocW (Converts text files into Palm Pilot docs)
  • Middle Caps Hack (Auto-capitalizes letters. No more upstrokes!)
  • FILEZ (a sort of super file and application manager for your Palm)

SHAREWARE :

  • Backup Buddy (The built in conduits back up the built in databases. Everything else is hit and miss. One set of dead batteries is all it will take to have you singing Backup Buddy's praises.)
  • Datebk5 (Everything Palm meant to include in Datebook but forgot.)
  • Flash Pro (Allows you to write to the 500-800 Kb of unused memory on your ROM chip. On a 2 Mb Palm V, this adds about 40% more memory for $20.00.)
  • HackMaster (Can anyone use a Palm Pilot for long without adding hacks? Why would you want to? The best $5.00 you'll ever invest in software.)
  • iSilo Reader (Doc and HTML reader. There is a freeware version available, but at $12.50 the full featured reader is an amazing bargain.)

OTHER USEFUL STUFF

These are apps I use constantly. However, depending on how you use your Palm, they may be nothing but big space wasters to you.

CLOCKS

  • Big Clock (Alarms, stop watch, world and local time. FREEWARE)

DATABASES

  • HanDBase (Try it - you'll like it. Look at the HanDBase Gallery for already made databases. SHAREWARE)

DOC READERS & EDITORS

  • WORDSMITH (Lets you edit MS Word docs on your Palm. It can double as a reader. Lots of features. SHAREWARE)

INSTALLERS

  • InstallBuddy (Replaces the Palm Install tool. It has a series of plug-ins that automatically convert Word docs to Palm docs, HTML files to iSilo docs, Excel spreadsheets to csv files for the Palm, PDF files to Palm Docs, plus lots more. Buy it bundled with Backup Buddy and save $10.00. SHAREWARE)

LISTS

  • Listmaker (Creates hierarchical, highly customizable lists. Sort of an outliner with checkboxes. SHAREWARE.)

  • HandyShopper (Manage shopping lists to within an inch of their lives. It can now keep track of an item's aisle location in multiple stores. FREEWARE)

PICTURES

  • Albums To Go (Let's you convert JPEGS to highly compressed Palm files. Carry pictures of your sweetie with you. FREEWARE)

UTILITIES

  • ClearHack (Removes the lines from MemoPad and Datebook. SHAREWARE)

  • CorrectHack (Allows you to define a list of commonly misspelled words or abbreviations that will be automatically replaced with the correct spelling or expanded text. Like shortcuts without the shortcut stroke. SHAREWARE)

  • MenuHack (Tap the top of the screen -- instead of the silk screen Menu button -- to display the Menu Bar. FREEWARE)

  • PopUp Calculator (Pops up a calculator in the current application -- no need to go back and forth between apps. SHAREWARE)

  • PopUp Time (Pops up the time in the current application. SHAREWARE)

  • Runtime (Allows you to keep a record of how long your last 10 pairs of batteries lasted. FREEWARE)
